Session 3- Day 3

The Ceramics Room has been busy this week with the groups making ceramic items. Sandy has been teaching the groups, step by step, how to create things like bowls, pots, cupcakes, frogs and much more! They first must make their objects from clay then decorate it with stamps and/or marker lids to leave fun impressions. Their hard work is then fired over a 24-hour period. Once their work is cool, it is ready to come out of the kiln. Firing changes the color of the clay and changes the glaze to glass.

The Turquoise Group did their last step to complete their ceramic bowls. They chose from a selection of colors and painted two coats of glaze in and around their bowl. The bowls will later be placed in the kiln to be fired for the second time. The combination of glazing and firing the bowl gives the shiny finish.

After the Turquoise Group finished painting their bowls they began making ceramic necklaces. Sandy rolled out meatball-sized balls of clay for each child. The balls were flattened out with their palm so it is a smooth surface to work on. The children were given stamps and marker caps to create texture. Some groups even used the bottom of their shoe. They will be placed in the kiln to be fired so the children can later paint them!

Don't bite into these cupcakes! The children worked with Sandy to create boxes in the form of a cupcake. To make the bottom, they molded clay to a cupcake tin to create the realistic size and shape of a cupcake. The children were very creative making the tops. One child made the top of the cupcake to look like the Cookie Monster while others took a more realistic approach.

The Red Group is building wooden sculptures and later will paint them. The children enjoyed hammering and gluing wood of all different shapes and sizes. They were given blocks, sticks, corks and much more to build anything they can imagine.

Today, the Green Group made flying UFOs. After the children generated a list of things they knew about UFOs, they made sure their UFOs had those features.

Summer spree signature is bright colored tie dyes.
